Sunday, April 13Around the world, millions of people lack access to sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. The three programs supported by One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) — Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People — all work in different ways to serve individuals and communities in need. From initial disaster response to ongoing community development, their work fits together to provide people with safety, sustenance, and hope. Received during the season of Lent, each gift to OGHS helps to improve the lives of people in these challenging situations. The Offering provides us a way to share God's love with our neighbors in need. In fact, OGHS is the single, largest way Presbyterians come together every year to work for a better world.
One Great Hour of Sharing Success Story
Alliance for African Assistance. You might recognize the name of one of our mission partners as the recipient of our Christmas in July drive. Walter Lam, the founder, is the smiling face you see as you drop off your donations, and that smiling face reflects the love and presence of God in this world.
After immigrating to the United States from Uganda in 1986, Walter recognized there were no programs to meet the needs of African refugees in San Diego. With the encouragement of his pastor, he applied for and received a grant of $7,000 funded by a One Great Hour of Sharing special offering. In 1989 he used that money to found the Alliance for African Assistance and Safari Seconds thrift store for the purpose of helping African refugees. In no time, the organization was open to refugees from around the world as well as to local community members. Seeing medical needs, Walter founded the Alliance Health Clinic in 2007, open to both refugees and community members. In addition to helping refugees from around the world, they are building a 200-bed hospital in Uganda as well as sponsoring 150 children in Uganda with the help of congregations here in San Diego. Along with their headquarters in San Diego, Alliance for African Assistance has offices in Italy, Kenya, and Uganda.
We can't help but see God at work in the world today through the work of Walter, Alliance for African Assistance, and all our Mission partners.
