The Ushers Ministry is looking to add to our members anyone who wants to greet and assist in worship as ushers.
There will be a planning and training luncheon on Sunday, February 23 at 12:00-1:30 PM, gathering in the parlor. This is for current ushers and interested parties. Please join us if you want to learn more about becoming an usher! USHERING by Victor OlleyI've been ushering at our Church for around six years now. When I began, there were about 12 ushers per service. I offered myself up to be an usher because I felt I should do what I thought would be the least important thing I could do to help out, plus I was attracted by the wages! I soon learned that there were increments that came each time I ushered. I am too modest to say just how much I earn, but I can tell you that through the Covid shutdown I earned a mint! On top of that there was a bonus to be earned. I got to hear members of the choir and our brilliant organist every week whether I ushered or not.
Well, as you can imagine, ushering for The Village Church turned out to be the best job I ever had. Just think, I was a relatively new guy at our Church, but each Sunday that I ushered, I became a bit better known, just by saying (as I gave out the service order booklet) things like "Good morning," or "Hi Alice" or "Nice to see you again," and sometimes, "Welcome to our Church" – or help someone with their walker by putting it to one side during the service.
Ushering is without doubt the best job in the Church. I highly recommend you give it a try. All that is necessary is to turn up a half hour earlier than the service (I do the 10.30 service), then when the service is in progress you get to count all the congregation attending the service and write the total on a card (supplied), and if you become a "trusty", you get to put the weekly offerings into the safe.
After that is the time I love, because sometimes when you've done all that, you find there is no one else in the body of the Kirk (church) and you can have a wee quiet word with God all on your own, before a wee coffee outside and a naughty doughnut hole before you get home for a well-earned rest.
I am certain that if you volunteered for this job, you would just love it.
See you in Church.
God Bless,
Victor
